Lamson-Cashion Trail and History Hub

Along the eastern edge of California, the Sierra Nevada stands as a formidable barrier, challenging travelers and limiting commerce between east and west. But there are routes through the mountains, Donner Pass being one of the most important. And at the top of Donner Pass is the Lamson-Cashion Trail and History Hub where visitors and locals can jump into mountain adventures and immerse themselves in the region's rich history and culture.

Where The Mountains Meet The Valleys

The Hub is at a central point within the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It sits at the intersection of the north-south Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the east-west Donner Pass Road, two vital routes but for different reasons.

The PCT is legendary among backpackers. Each year thousands from around the world hike its 2,650-mile length from the Mexican border through the California desert, along the highest stretches of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges to Canada. The Hub serves as a major node on this journey — after 40% of the distance, at the boundary between central and northern California, and as the geology changes from uplifted granite to remnant volcanoes.

From the Hub, travelers can also embark on journeys either east or west descending Donner Pass Road into contrasting landscapes. To the east, one enters the arid high desert of the Great Basin. To the west lies the fertile expanse of the Central Valley, the agricultural heartland of America.

History

Besides its role as a geographical focal point, the Hub holds immense historical significance. Renowned local historian Bill Oudegeest dubbed the square mile surrounding the Hub as perhaps the most important in California's history. Perhaps even across the entire western US. This designation stems from its importance in trade and migration over millennia. Not coincidentally, the Hub itself sits directly above Tunnel 6, the longest tunnel along the historic Transcontinental Railroad.

For those eager to delve into the rich tapestry of history that has unfolded here, a visit to our History page is a must. Explore everything from the presence of Native Americans to the installation of the first transcontinental phone line. There’s a separate page on the history of The Hub itself — its conception, design, construction, and dedication which you can view here.

Perfect Place To Begin

As you would expect, this spot along the Sierra Crest boasts some of the most jaw-dropping scenery and natural attractions in California. The Lamson-Cashion trailhead not only grants access to the PCT but also features information kiosks, mini railroad carriages, and a bicycle repair station. From the brochure dispensers, you can pick up informative materials to aid in your further exploration of the area.
