Around Donner Summit there are are dozens of sites where petroglyphs have been incised into granite. Within view of surrouding mountain peaks, these sites show the reverence the Native American must have had for the landscape.
No one knows what the abstract symbols mean, but they must have had great significance because granite is one of the hardest rocks on the planet, and carving the petroglyphs was both difficlut and time consuming.
